Amid growing concerns over online gaming addiction and recent incidents of religious conversion through games, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has revealed plans to ban three specific types of games in India. In an interview with ANI, Chandrasekhar stated that the government has already drafted a blueprint outlining the new regulations. While he did not disclose the exact criteria for classifying games into these categories, he identified the following types of games that will be prohibited:
- Games that involve betting
- Games that can be harmful to users
- Games that have addictive elements
The minister emphasized that this framework represents the first-ever comprehensive guidelines for online gaming in India. The aim is to prevent the proliferation of games that promote gambling, pose potential harm to users, or contribute to addictive behavior.
The implementation of these new rules will have a significant impact on major application stores such as Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store, which currently dominate the Indian gaming market. The government’s move is intended to safeguard the well-being of Indian users and mitigate the adverse effects associated with certain types of online games.
