In the quiet town of Kashipur, Uttarakhand, a revolution in education has been quietly unfolding for the past two decades. At the helm of this movement stand Mrs. Vasudha Kapoor and Mr. Neeraj Kapoor, founders of The Gurukul Foundation School. What began on 2nd April 2004 with just 13 students and three teachers has today blossomed into an institution of over 1,100 learners and 75 educators, redefining what education can mean in a small town.
For Vasudha, the journey was deeply personal. Once a struggling student herself, she later rose to academic excellence, topping her batch at Banaras Hindu University and earning a Gold Medal from Rashtriya Shiksha Parishad. Her early setbacks became the foundation of her empathy as an educator. Yet it was tragedy—the untimely loss of her younger son, Chaitanya—that transformed her determination into a mission. His memory remains the heartbeat of Gurukul, as Vasudha continues to live by her motto: “seeing our child in every child.”
Neeraj Kapoor, her co-founder and husband, complements this vision with his farmer-entrepreneur background and passion for sustainability. His ventures in agriculture and rural innovation influence Gurukul’s ethos, blending modern pedagogy with timeless Indian wisdom. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s vision of nation-building through education, Neeraj believes learning must build character as much as intellect.
Together, they built a school that bridges the gap between India’s ancient Gurukul system and modern STEM-focused learning. Students engage in storytelling, yoga, arts, robotics, and innovation, while also grounding themselves in values, cultural identity, and compassion. The unique four-way handshake—between management, teachers, parents, and learners—creates a collaborative ecosystem where every child’s growth is a shared mission.
The journey, however, was far from smooth. The Kapoors began with limited resources in a dilapidated factory building left unused for decades. With bats in the rafters and decay all around, they transformed the structure into a temple of learning with resourcefulness and courage. Funds were scarce, and every year they expanded the school class by class, taking loans, mortgaging assets, and reinvesting every rupee. Winning parental trust in a town of over 50 schools required resilience and innovation.
Yet, persistence paid off. Today, Gurukul has earned accolades such as being ranked Kashipur’s No. 1 Co-ed Day School for seven consecutive years and securing top positions in Uttarakhand. Their students have gone on to shine nationally, winning competitions like the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the Best Engineered Car Award at F1 in Schools, and prestigious debating honors.
At its core, Gurukul is not just a school but a living tribute to resilience, values, and vision. For Vasudha and Neeraj, every smiling child is a reminder of their purpose, every milestone an echo of Chaitanya’s laughter that once filled the unfinished halls.
As they mark 20 years of Gurukul in 2024, their dream expands to creating a pan-India network of early childhood centres, scaling their unique pedagogy across rural and urban India. Their advice to entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Start with purpose, not just a plan. Build with values, and success will follow.”
Through Gurukul, the Kapoors have built more than a school. They have built a sanctuary of hope, where heritage and innovation meet, and where every child is prepared not just for exams, but for life.
